With regard to ancestral medicines like ayahuasca, peyote, and iboga, the challenges to understand how the tradition of use is perhaps more important than the medicine itself create the possibility that those traditions may be lost, due to the focus within the modern medical paradigm being the medicine over its method of use.
I feel we have far more to learn from the shamanic traditions and the paradigm in which they operate than from more traditional investigations from the modern medical perspective.

Personally, I think one of the main things at risk when anything becomes commercialized is that many people forget they can do it themselves.

From my experience in the cannabis industry, so many people would love to grow their own at home, but they legally can't unless they are a licensed medical patient (at least in Washington state where I lived). Same goes for the psychedelic industry. Once psilocybin is commercialized, I truly hope people remember/learn/know how to grow their own medicine at home. I truly hope it's legal to do so and that there are thorough resources to learn... (More)
